I think the most significant milestone is "the rapid increase in brain size" because its when we started to question why of things, we started to understand phenomenon that before wasn't important.

Homo Heidelbergensis, were the first human species to travel to and live in Europe, because they knew how to built shelters to protect themselves from cold. they made that trip about 700.000 to 200.000 years ago.

Homo Erectus were the ones who survived for the longest time, surviving more than nine times as long as our own species. They survivied for 1.747.000 years.
